Master the Simple Past Tense step by step.
We use Simple Past Tense to talk about completed actions in the past.
"I watched TV yesterday."
"She visited her grandmother last week."
"They played football last Sunday."
• yesterday
• last week/month/year
• two days ago
• in 2020
Which sentence uses Simple Past Tense correctly?
For regular verbs, we add "-ed" to the base verb.
| Base Verb | Simple Past |
|---|---|
| walk | walked |
| play | played |
| watch | watched |
| clean | cleaned |
• Verbs ending with e → add d (live → lived)
• Verbs ending with consonant + y → ied (study → studied)
• One-syllable verbs ending with vowel + consonant → double consonant + ed (stop → stopped)
What is the simple past form of "study"?
Irregular verbs do not follow the -ed rule. You need to memorize them!
| Base Verb | Simple Past |
|---|---|
| go | went |
| eat | ate |
| see | saw |
| take | took |
| write | wrote |
| buy | bought |
"I went to school yesterday."
"She ate breakfast this morning."
"They bought a new car last month."
What is the simple past form of "go"?
Use did not (didn't) + base verb
"I did not watch TV yesterday."
"She didn't go to school last week."
Use Did + subject + base verb
"Did you watch TV yesterday?"
"Did she go to school last week?"
In negative and questions, we use the base verb, NOT the past form!
